Introduction of School of Statistics
School of Statistics in Shandong University of Finance and Economics has a long history as the university, which can be traced back to the 1950s. When Shandong Cooperative Cadre School was founded in December 1950, there were two majors: Accounting and Statistics. In October, 1952, the Department of Economics of Qilu University was merged into Shandong Provincial Accounting Junior College. When Shandong Institute of Finance and Economics was established with the approval of the Central Ministry of Education, two teaching units, the Department of Economic Planning and the Department of Statistics, were established. The School of Statistics has four teaching and research departments, namely, the Department of Economic Statistics, the Department of Econometric Economics, the Department of Mathematical Statistics, and the Department of Data Science. It has 6 academic research teams, 4 teaching and research teams and 1 alumni working team. It has established the Institute of Social and Economic Statistics, the Institute of Financial Statistics, the Institute of Applied Mathematical Statistics and the Institute of Data Mining. It has teaching and research platforms such as Shandong Big Data Research Society, Shandong University of Finance and Economics Big Data and Index Research Institute, and Shandong Key Laboratory of Big Data and Macroeconomic Monitoring in the 13th Five-Year Plan.
In 2018, the School of Statistics was granted the permission to confer a doctorate in statistics discipline, forming a complete education and training system for talents in statistics disciplines with degrees of bachelor, master and doctor. It has three undergraduate majors: Economic Statistics, Statistics, Data Science and Big Data Technology. Among them, the major of Economic Statistics enrolled the first undergraduate students in 1980, which is one of the four majors that Shandong University of Finance and Economics first recruited. Statistics major began to recruit the first undergraduate students in 2013; The major of Data Science and Big Data Technology was approved to be established in 2018, and the first undergraduate students were enrolled in September 2018. It has three master's degree programs: in 1996, it was granted the permission to confer master's degree in statistics, which is the first master's degree program in Shandong Province. In 2010, the first batch of students were granted the permission to confer master's degree in Applied Statistics (MAS); in 2011, the first batch of students were granted the permission to confer master’s degree in statistics first-level discipline; and in 2012, the first batch of students were granted the permission to confer master's degree in financial statistics (out of the catalogue) interdisciplinary subjects. Among them, the master degree program in statistics (academic degree) has five research directions: Social and Economic Statistics, Market Survey and Analysis, Financial Statistics, Theory and Method of Economic Statistics, Data Mining and Big data analysis. The Master’s degree program in Financial Statistics (academic degree) has two research directions: Securities Investment Statistical Analysis, Financial Statistics, and Risk Management. The Master of Applied Statistics (MAS) program has four research directions: Economic Statistics, Financial Statistics, Market Survey and Analysis, and Financial Statistics and Risk Management. It has the permission to confer doctoral degree in first-level discipline of Statistics: in 2013, it obtained the permission to confer doctoral degree in statistics (second-level discipline of Applied Economics); In 2018, it was granted the permission to confer its doctorate in statistics, a first-level discipline, with four major disciplines, including Financial Statistics and Risk Management, Social and Economic Statistics, Mathematical statistics, and Data Mining and Visualization. The major of statistics is a provincial key discipline, a provincial characteristic major and a provincial first-class major.
The School of Statistics has 62 faculty members, including 50 full-time teachers, 11 professors, 18 associate professors and 4 pre-appointed associate professors. There are 5 doctoral supervisors, 21 master supervisors, 36 doctoral teachers and 6 doctoral candidates, forming a faculty and academic innovation team with appropriate structure of academic background, knowledge, age and title, innovative spirit and development potential. In recent years, it has undertaken 17 national projects, published more than 150 academic papers and 10 monographs in core journals such as Statistical Research, Quantitative Economic, Technological and Economic Research, IEEE-TAC, ESAIM, Chinese Science, and Journal of Theoretical Probability, and won 6 provincial and ministerial scientific research awards. Since 2018, the university has won 5 national Natural Science Funds, 2 National Social Science funds and 2 provincial Teaching Achievement Awards.
There are 1474 students in the School of Statistics, including 1340 undergraduates, 128 postgraduates and 6 doctoral students. The college has been adhering to the educational principle of " wide caliber, thick foundation, focusing application and deep potential", set up the scientific educational development concept, and always follow the development road of quality first, and committed to training diversified and innovative talents. Through teaching reformation, practice base construction and cooperation and domestics and international exchange, students' scientific research practical ability and innovation ability are generally improved. In the last five years, more than 200 students have won various national competitions such as national statistical modeling contest and National Market Survey Contest. The postgraduate entrance examination rate has reached more than 30%, and the employment rate of postgraduates has always been 100%.
“We still have a long way to go.” Under the new situation, in that the country plans as a whole to promote the world first-class university and the first-class discipline construction, in the "data is resources" era of big data, all the statistics faculty members will continue to carry forward the "rigorous, innovation, honest, pragmatic" spirit of adhering to the "quality flourishes school and talents strengthen school" concept, and keep initial purpose firmly in mind and move on!
